Great lakes of the world

Introduction

Lake can be defined as the large size water body surrounded by land. Most of the lakes around the world contain fresh water. Majority of lakes in the world are found in the northern hemisphere. There are natural and artificial lakes, of which the artificial one are used for purpose such as industrial and agricultural purpose. (1)

Formation of natural lakes

There are number of different natural processes which are involved in the formation of lakes. "A recent tectonic uplift of a mountain range can create bowl-shaped depressions that accumulate water and form lakes" (1). Some lakes are formed as a result of "crust's subsidence as two plates are pulled apart" (1).
