On January 15th, Columbus travelled back to Spain via the Azores, where he encountered strong winds and storms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus).

He remained on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores and he was yet again delayed by strong winds which compelled him to change course and go to Lisbon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus).

He stayed in Portugal for about a week before leaving for Spain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus).

Columbus and his crew reached their Spanish destination on the 15th March 1493 where he was well-received by the king and queen, as well as by the nation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus).

His first voyage was a huge success and the monarchs arranged for Christopher Columbus' second expedition.
