Dalton Gibbs - Area Manager

Dalton is the Area Manager responsible for nature conservation in the southern parts of Cape Town. For many years, he was the Manager of Rondevlei Nature Reserve and looked after Cape Town’s only family of hippos. When one of them escaped from the nature reserve, Dalton led the team that eventually recaptured this huge animal. Dalton is passionate about restoring nature in the City of Cape Town. He has worked with people to:

  • restore lost wetlands,
  • rescue plants and animals before sites on the Cape Flats are bulldozed for housing,
  • re-establish the Cape Flats Erica that was extinct in the wild, and
  • re-create natural fynbos habitat at the homes of Zeekoevlei residents.

Dalton also believes that local people must benefit from the city’s nature reserves. He has helped to create partnerships like Imvubu Nature Tours and the Cape Town Environmental Education Trust (CTEET), which enable tourists, schools and youth groups to enjoy these natural areas.
